Informed by over ten years experience in the healing arts, I help people get in touch with the truth inside of them. I have found that when people truly come to know themselves, they are able to make positive and lasting changes naturally. My approach is interactive, experiential, and emotion-focused; combining present-time embodied awareness with deep psychological insight. I don't 'just listen'. Some of my specialties include working with healing arts professionals, dysfunctional family of origin issues, couple’s therapy, recovery issues, spiritual crises, and chronic illness. I can be reached at 510-649-7551 ext 308.

I view psychotherapy as an opportunity to work with individuals to examine how they see themselves and their relationships, assisting them in re-creating their lives based on their most treasured values, beliefs, hopes and intentions. My approach is down to earth, flexible and collaborative. As a bilingual (Spanish/English) therapist with a history of fourteen years of non-profit agency work experience, I have worked with individuals from a wide variety of cultural and national backgrounds. My areas of specialization include working with survivors of trauma such as domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, ritual abuse, severe mental illness and HIV/AIDS. I work out of the BAPS’ Hayward, Oakland and Berkeley offices and provide individual therapy to teens and adults in Spanish or English.
Are you sometimes consumed by WORRY? Do you often spend too much time concerned about what could go wrong? Do others sometimes say "You're too sensitive"? I'd like to help. Some babies in nurseries startle and cry to loud noises while others continue sleeping. What I know is that some people are more highly sensitive. They tend to worry more often and with greater intensity than others. Life is full of uncertainties but they don't need to control you. What I do is teach people simple strategies that help them to relax more, worry less and get a better night's sleep. Don't worry another day. Call me at (510) 303-9345.
Eliot Schain
eschain@b-a-p-s.org
Eliot Schain received his MA in Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University. He also received an MFA from Columbia University, a BA from UC Berkeley, and has been teaching adolescents in the public schools for seventeen years. He hopes to continue working with that age group (14-20) in order to help facilitate the transitions to adulthood, but he also enjoys working with couples and older adults. He is drawn to Object Relations theories, as a way to understand the scripts we keep replaying throughout our lives, but also uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in order to promote quicker change. His offices are in Berkeley and Pleasant Hill.

I offer psychotherapy and counseling for a broad array of personal issues including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and the general challenges that we all experience with major and minor life transitions. I have experience working with adults, adolescents, and couples. I have had great success in helping my clients by providing a supportive yet challenging therapeutic environment. I primarily use cognitive-behavioral interventions, conceptualize from a systems & solution-focused perspective, and employ a positive psychology, strength-based approach.

The therapeutic alliance is a unique one: a professional relationship with unconditional trust. The safety of this relationship allows clients to become increasingly able to express their true self, without fear of judgment. Utilizing a strength-based approach, I work from a psychodynamic foundation that incorporates relational, strategic and attachment theories, with mindfulness, empathy, and expressive play. I have a M.S in Counseling (Child/Adolescent emphasis) and practice in both private and school settings. Areas of focus include children/adolescents having difficulties with social skills, defiant behavior, self-mutilation and low self esteem. I also work with adults around issues of anger, depression, life transition, and family of origin, as well as with families seeking emotional and/or legal reunification. My goal is to encourage clients to develop the capacity for insight, the ability to understand, the courage to change, and the confidence to express their true self.
